In this 9-11th grade English class, students will be grouped by their reading and writing levels instead of age or grade, although older students tend to be grouped together in the same class due to their comprehension skills as a function of age.
Upon entering high school, students are expected to read and write at a relatively high level, as the skills of comprehension and writing become increasingly important in all subjects. Students are not simply introduced to, but are given great literature and expected to read independently for the most part. In the more advanced classes such as AP or Honors English curriculum, the expectation comes close to that of a college student. Hence, one of the components of this class will be college-level training in writing, including independent research and personal statements, especially for the older and more advanced students.
Once in high school, it is assumed that students no longer need to work on grammar; instead the focus will be on syntax. Students will be asked to write strong, persuasive essays containing long and complex sentences mixed with short, brief sentences with the goal of discovering one's distinct style.
For this 9-11th grade Writing Course, there are two types of courses available depending on the needs of the student.
As an acceleration course that meets 2-3 times a week, it is designed to help high schoolers to read serious literature with confidence and write competent timed essays, with the overall goal of improving grades in the short run, and preparing for college-level readiness in the long run.
As an enrichment course that meets once a week, it is designed for high schoolers who enjoy reading in their own time, especially the classics. Students will be asked to interpret texts that may require some independent research. Students will also be introduced to various approaches of literary criticism and learn how to incorporate them into writing.
Below is a partial sample syllabus from a 9th grade acceleration course:

Pricing for this course is dependent upon the number of students enrolled:
One-on-one teaching: $70 per student per 90 minute-long class
2-3 students: $50 per student
4-6 students: $40 per student
One-on-one teaching: $70 per student per 90 minute-long class
2-3 students: $50 per student
4-6 students: $40 per student
Maximum enrollment per class is 6 students in order to make sure that each individual student receives ample attention and class discussion time. Writing at the high school level requires many hours of grading time; hence an increase in the number of students per class will not decrease the tuition per person as significantly as in the lower grades.
Upon enrollment, student will be guided through the following process:
1. Placement: Student will receive a diagnostic screening (up to 30 min) in order to determine the student's needs. Parents will also receive a phone consultation in discussion of common goals.
2. Syllabus: Parent will receive a syllabus outlining the length, content, and delivery method of class, which will serve as a contract between parent and Boston Roundtable. Once parent and Boston Roundtable have reached mutual agreement regarding the syllabus, parent will choose and enroll in a tuition payment schedule.
3. Class begins as soon as the teacher, TA, and parents find a convenient schedule that works for all participants.
