2019-2020 Counselor Information and Application

Boston Roundtable counselors are not your average camp counselors because these are not your average camps! Our counselors are hardworking, versatile staff members who fill many roles throughout the camp's duration including teacher, supervisor, and mentor figure. Their global-minded perspectives make them great host figures for our students, and facilitates strong cultural exchange. They bring great qualifications to the table and also take opportunities to gain valuable experience while acting as a counselor.

2019-2020 Season Overview:

The Boston Roundtable 2019-2020 travel season will visit all four corners of the USA and is expected to serve over 300 students.

Summer (Concluded):
​College Exploratory Camp (Session 1: 7/5-7/17, Session 2: 7/19-7/31)
      Traveling Stops: Boston, New York, Washington DC
NASA Space Camp (Session 1: 7/3-7/15, Session 2: 7/17-7/29)
      Traveling Stops: San Francisco, Orlando
American Language and Cultural Immersion (ALCI) Camp (7/6-7/19)
      Traveling Stops: Boston, New York
West Coast Basketball Camp (7/5-7/18)
​      Traveling Stops: Oakland/San Francisco, Las Vegas
West Coast Learning Exchange (8/6-8/16)
      Traveling Stops: Los Angeles, San Francisco


Winter (Upcoming): 
NASA Space Camp  (Dates TBD, late January-early February 2020)

2019-2020 Counselor Profile:

Required Qualifications:
  • Native-like English fluency
  • Previous knowledge of Chinese culture
  • Previous experience acting in either a teacher or camp counselor role, preferably with children ages 8-18.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Beginner-to-intermediate level Chinese language skills
  • Ivy League or comparable top-ranking college students and recent graduates
  • TEFOL or TESL Certification/Previous experience teaching ESL

Responsibilities:
  • Together with a Chinese group leader, co-supervise and teach a small group of 15-17 students. You will be responsible for their physical safety and personal growth.
  • Lead the students in various activities, including both classroom-based and mobile learning, as well as taking students on narrated tours of renowned locations and universities.
  • Be a part of our program design and organization team and assist in other tasks that may arise over the course of the program (as assigned by the program director).

Training:
  • Depending on program size, counselors may be required to attend a three-day training hosted by Boston Roundtable. Housing and meals will be provided for the duration of the training. For smaller camps, trainings will be done in one-hour Skype sessions and day-of meetings,
  • We will go over the pedagogical and organizational skills necessary to be a counselor.
  • You will be given the teaching materials for each major stop of your program in advance, and will be quizzed on your comprehension of the material.

Perks of Working at Boston Roundtable This Season:
  • Base salary of $1,400 per session, with three opportunities for performance-based bonuses (not exceeding a total salary of $2,000) upon:
    1. Satisfactory evaluation of pre-training material preparation
    2. Successful completion of the program
    3. Completion of all postmortem documents after the camp
  • Meals and lodging provided at and in-between traveling destinations, including Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, New Haven, Washington D.C., San Francisco, Miami, and more.
  • Great opportunities to hone leadership skills and gain experience in hands-on teaching, event organizing, and public speaking.
  • Being a mentor to international youths and inspire the changes you want to see on the international stage. Deepening U.S.-China relations is up to you!  
 
Counselors who perform to satisfaction this summer will also be invited to join Boston Roundtable in future installments of the camps, as well as the expansion of new programs!

How To Apply:

 The easiest way to apply to be a counselor is to fill out our website application. No cover letter is required, however you will be asked to provide your resume at the end of the form. Please answer all questions honestly and to the best of your ability.

​Selected candidates will be invited to a 30-minute video interview (Boston-area candidates may elect for an in-person interview). Hiring processes for a travel camp are typically concluded one to two months before the program start date.
