Become an Advisor

About Our Advisors

Boston Roundtable is proud to have a team of accomplished advisors to assist our international students in the college application process. Advisors meet with students on a one-to-one basis and advise in all aspects of the application process from personal statement editing to longterm extracurricular planning.

Currently, we employ two kinds of advisors:
  • Contracted Independent Advisors: Professionals who advise students for a living, typically with a higher level of advisory experience.
  • Junior Advisors: Recent graduates or current students of top target schools for our students who lend practical advice in the application process. Junior advisors may also be from specialized programs specific to our students' interests (i.e. Arts, Humanities, STEM).

Top college graduates or current students with a passion for making quality education accessible to international students are encouraged to apply for this position. The essential things to know are:
  • This position is for graduates of ivy league or comparable schools, as well as graduates of specialized programs in areas such as Arts, Humanities, STEM etc.
  • The work is primarily conducted remotely through video technology, but occasionally may include meeting a USA-residing student in person.
  • This per-diem position is part time, and should not be relied on as a base salary. Work and tasks are assigned as they become available

Frequently Asked Questions:
How do i meet with students?
Because the majority of our students are based overseas, you will primarily communicate with them using a personalized Skype account given to you by Boston Roundtable.

There are some instances where a client is currently attending school in the United States. If you are assigned to a domestic student who is located near you, Boston Roundtable may ask you to visit the student in person, usually in a public area such as a coffee shop or their school campus. Advisors going on in-person visits will be accompanied by a full time staff member of Boston Roundtable's and will be reimbursed for all travel expenses.
How much am i compensated?
Boston Roundtable starts all junior advisors at a base salary of $25/hour. The payscale may be raised based on type of meeting (in person vs. online), higher qualifications of advisors, as well as longterm commitment to Boston Roundtable. Examples of higher qualifications may include, but are not limited to:
  • A graduate degree
  • Previous editorial experience (newspaper, magazine, etc.)
  • An award or other recognition for accomplishments in English writing
Why is this position only for ivy or SIMILARLY-QUALIFIED applicants?
Our international students strive for the highest-ranked schools in America, and will generally achieve the best results when mentored by someone who has been through a similar system. An advisor from the student's target school or a similar institution will typically have the most pertinent advice, and take the student the furthest in their application process.

Boston Roundtable also makes exceptions for graduates of strong individualized programs of non-ivy schools. For example, a music graduate from a non-ivy school with a top music program will still considered as qualified as an ivy-educated applicant in a top program at their home university.
What are the basic responsibilities of this position?
Advisors facilitate every aspect of the college process. Some of the main aspects advisors frequently contribute to include:
  • Planning, editing, and revising an applicant's personal statement and supplemental materials

Advisors are encouraged to use a combination of the guides, as well as their own experience as a former college applicant.

Full time staff members from Boston Roundtable may supervise sessions in special instances such as in-person visits, and will offer regular feedback on an advisors performance.

Specifics of the Independent Advisor Role
